From Eric Crum, Community Environmental Services, Portland State University
"The Blues Festival successfully implemented behind the house composting with all 10 of their vendors. The festival crew also developed good signage to compliment the City of Portland Recycle here/Garbage here tall banners to facilitate the collection of over 70,000 compostable beer and wine cups from the public at 7 main stations.
The outcome from these additional efforts are very notable:
- The 2010 Blues Festival reduced the amount of garbage produced at the event by 1.1 tons or 18.3 tons overall. In 2009 the festival produced 19.4 tons of garbage.
- The amount of mixed recycling collected was up almost 1 ton, 4.4 tons overall. In 2009, the festival collected 3.5 tons of mixed recycling.
- The amount of glass collected was up 0.6 tons, 2 tons overall. Last year the event captured 1.4 tons of glass.
- NEW FOR 2010! - The Blues Festival successfully collected 1.25 tons of food scraps and food soiled paper from their vendors and the public!
- Over all diversion rate for the event is up nearly 10% this year to just under 30%. Last year the event diverted 20% of their waste.
I wanted to recognize Tyler and his crew for playing such a big role in this substantial improvement. This is a big step in the right direction for this festival."
